Dainty daffodils

DAFFODILS suit the British climate well and every spring we look forward to their swathes of yellow lighting up parks and road verges. The cultivar ‘Rijnveld’s Early Sensation’ sets the ball rolling in mid to late winter, and in their turn others bloom through to May.

Bulbs are planted in autumn, flower in spring and repeat their display for years. It is tempting to reach for a bag of mixed bulbs, but if you dig deeper, or read a catalogue or two, a whole world of different flowering times, heights, flower sizes, shapes and colours will open up.

Tall daffodils with large trumpets can look out of proportion in small gardens, so seek out the daintier and more unusual cultivars that are ideal for turf, borders, rock
