FIT FOR PURPOSE

Club fitting in golf is hardly a new concept. The idea of building golf clubs specifically to suit the needs and measurements of a golfer well established since the days of pioneers like Karsten Solheim, who founded PING and its Colour Code system.

But fitting and club building has come along in leaps and bounds in recent years to enhance golfers’ ability to improve and play their best golf.

Launch monitors like Trackman and Foresight have played a significant role, so too equipment manufacturers investing more in their own technologies and research, while the precision of club and shaft making processes has similarly improved and broadened options and capabilities.

With this advancement it has arguably never been more important to undertake a club fitting before purchasing new clubs, be it a single putter, set of irons, or the entire bag. And assuming your existing specs from the last time you were fit is an idea fraught with danger.

As some of the biggest names in golf equipment and club fitting outline over the following pages, fitting specifically to the model you are investing your hard earned in is important, so too the balance of set makeup when buying new clubs.

To give some idea of how this works, Olympic gold medallist Xander Schauffele recently switched Callaway golf ball models, which necessitated a switch in driver model to optimise his performance. So with the ability to leave no stone unturned in the mould of the top professionals, why would you?

And for those that believe their game isn’t at the stage that requires custom built golf clubs, think again.

As is the case with the sometimes opposite nature of golf, those with perhaps less skill can benefit more than their more skilled equivalents from investing the time and effort into getting equipment to suit themselves and their developing golf game.
