Budget aggregate wagon conversion

AMONG the most satisfying modelling projects are those that can be completed in a couple of days, using readily available and inexpensive materials.

The featured MTV/ZKV four-wheel box aggregate wagons was built using the venerable but useful former Airfix tank wagon kit, currently produced by Dapol. It can be bought for anything between £6 and £9 and includes metal three-hole disc wheels (sometimes), alongside a very useful underframe.

When the scrap box is ransacked for as many useful off-cuts of styrene card and strip as possible, the construction cost of the project can be kept to as little as £10 to £15. The painting stage can add about £5 due to the cost of transfers and finishing materials. Nonetheless, a satisfying kit-bash project, that emulates a conversion undertaken by Standard Wagon in 1975, is the result.
