Timeless Table Traditions

When my husband took me home to meet his parents, his mother set the table with Blue Willow dishes. I gasped with happy recognition and carefully picked up a small plate. Turning it in my hands, I explained how it reminded me of my grandfather.

When we visited my grandpa, meals were served on the blue-and-white “everyday” dishes. The fanciful design sparked my imagination, and I marveled at the scene on my plate. Blue Willow tales about the origin of the pattern vary, but most versions are stories of clandestine lovers turned into doves who, finally free, swoop together over a weeping willow tree.
