Why does so much DLC have to be accessed through the main campaign? Many games are too long, so DLC often provides a kind of greatest-hits version of the main campaign, sometimes with a more interesting setting and a tighter story to boot. Think Shivering Isles compared to Oblivion, Minerva’s Den to BioShock 2, or perhaps Sam’s Story to Metro: Exodus.

In other words, DLC often presents a way to enjoy the main experiences a game offers in a complete, self-contained, and, most importantly, condensed package.

So having to slog through a significant chunk of the main campaign to access some of this DLC seems like an odd design choice. It’s like being forced to listen to a bunch of Foo Fighters albums before
