How to be ‘shootwise’
With partridges well under way, the pheasants will be along shortly. Once October gets going, the season always lurches into full swing and all our working dogs will be back at their jobs. One of the many knock-on effects of COVID-19 is that a lot of dogs are behind where they perhaps should be.
Many youngsters missed out on their first official season, so despite having much longer to train, they are now very ‘unshootwise’. This month, I am going to try to help you prepare your dogs for all the little unexpected things that can get in your way, literally and metaphorically, when you’re out in the field.
First, fences. Fences will appear on the vast majority of shoots and it makes a lot of sense to know how to get over safely. There are many different types of fence and how you tackle them
