Warm underfoot

Once considered a luxury confined to self-builds and large conversions, today underfloor heating is equally achievable in most period home renovations, thanks to the development of slim, low-profile systems. It can even solve some of the challenges that are unique to older properties, such as uneven or fragile walls, where radiators would be impractical. ‘One of the biggest benefits is that you can free up wall space,’ says Chris Holt, managing director at CDI Innovative Construction Materials, meaning that your interior design will not be restricted by radiators. This is particularly useful for period homes, which don’t always follow a conventional floorplan.
