Get smart with shrubs

SHRUBS make up the backbone of our gardens. These plants provide structure, permanence and, at their best, long seasons of flowers or foliage with the addition of fruits or autumn leaf colour and other features.

Yet many shrubs mature to a substantial size that’s too large for most gardens unless we get stuck in with the secateurs. So if pruning is simple, or even unnecessary, we appreciate it. Also, there are too many varieties that bring us a few fleeting weeks of flowers and nothing else for the rest of the year.
