hen the Kingdom of Jerusalem fell in 1291, the Templars lost their main reason for existence, but prior to this there were already accusations of pride, greed, treachery and sedition. The Order held large estates throughout Europe, some of which were gifts that could become bribes for political help. The Order also used its wealth for its banking operations, so less money went East, a reluctance compounded by the worsening situation there. Military failures in the East were sometimes interpreted as treachery.
