With more and more people recognizing that catching a good-sized mahimahi can be as much, if not more, fun than landing a big marlin or tuna, there are a few things that you might want to consider when preparing for a day of hunting and chasing down that big bull or cow so you, too, can say that you put a few big ones in your box.

One of the most important things for any successful fishing trip is your preparation. In some cases, this preparation can start as early as your previous trip by noting what techniques have worked, where the action may have been and what type of bait fish were most prevalent in the area. Try to read all the signs, such as birds and the currents at the end of each trip, and it can really make a difference. If you make a mental note about how many birds are returning from a particular direction, you can formulate a game plan for the next trip. That way you can adjust your game plan after you get an idea of what’s going on in the fishery.
