ASK THE EXPERTS

Q I’m shooting freestyle recurve, 37# on fingers as I come through the clicker. I was recently doing bareshaft testing and playing with different nocks. I found pin nocks (several models) always gave severe stiff results on bareshaft, even on shafts that should be very weak. The arrow model, point weight and length stayed the same. I tried spines from 900 to 500 and the readings were again stiff.

When I used push-in nocks – again, nock model didn’t seem to matter very much – the bareshaft readings were what you would expect: 700 spined out perfectly for my setup, 800 to 900 weak and 600 to 500 stiff.

Any reason as to why this happens? Is it a form issue? If so, why do arrows bareshaft as expected with push-in nocks but always stiff with pins? I realise
