The RASCAL, chartered out of Ma‘alaea Harbor, landed a 579.5-lb blue marlin for Wesley Luffman. Wesley was fishing with Capt. Kamal Pfeifle and deckman Sam Kalua.

Capt. Kamal had the RASCAL in 150 fathoms off Olowalu when they had a strike on the long-corner position. The marlin ran out 100 yards of 130-lb test line and then turned, looped out and around the port side, and took 300 to 400 yards of line.

Capt. Kamal started chasing down the line just as the Dacron backing left the spool. He was able to get in front of the marlin for a while and get an angle on the fish. He headed the boat into the current, back toward Kaho‘olawe,
