In 1950, Bedford announced their new S-Type range. It had a modern, all-steel cab and was advertised as the ‘Big’ Bedford. It was fitted with a new 4.9 litre, 110bhp petrol engine. A Perkins R6 diesel was also available, or from 1957 Bedford’s own diesel engine.
The SL lorry had a 156” wheelbase, the SS tipper a 116” wheelbase and the SA tractor unit an 86” wheelbase. There was also the SB 206” wheelbase bus chassis,
