Changing the face of sport medicine
“ Sports medicine, ingeneral, is a sub-discipline of medicine that focuses particularly on injury prevention, injury diagnosis, treatment and then rehabilitation,”Dr. Moshe Magethi explains by way of introduction into the scope of Sports Medicine Africa’s practice.
The organisation was founded in 2018 with the aim of providing quality and affordable care to black athletes and patients, while simultaneously striving to attain a standard that is on par with the leading sports medicine practices in the world.
Partnerships have since been developed with the Limpopo Academy of Sports and the University of Johannesburg, networks formed with physiotherapists, psychologists, dieticians and others, while a number of satellite branches are in the pipeline in addition to Sport Medicine Africa’s headquarters in Randburg.
There are also long-term plans afoot to expand into the African continent, but the immediate priority remains to establish themselves as a force on home soil.
To that effect, the organisation has adopted a number of practices and techniques that set them apart from many of their counterparts, including musculoskeletal imaging, shockwave therapy and concussion assessments, as well as platelet rich plasma injection (PRP) therapy which has been lauded as a game-changer when it comes to reducing the recovery period for certain injuries.
