The Chiefs keeper conundrum
The goalkeeping department at Kaizer Chiefs has again become a topical subject this season following the arrival of Brandon Petersen, bringing to four the number of shot stoppers on the club’s books.
All four – Itumeleng Khune, Daniel Akpeyi, Bruce Bvuma and Petersen – will feel justified in wanting the number one spot having all played in the PSL before.
Khune has earned legendary status at the club and remains popular, though his performances have been questionable recently.
Akpeyi, on the other hand, has done a decent job when called upon since his arrival in 2019, while for all the promise that Bvuma has shown when given the responsibility, he still needs to establish himself.
Petersen has come in having already loaded up game time at Ajax Cape Town and BidVest Wits and will feel that at 27 he also wants to be playing.
“Goalkeeper is a mentally draining position so there is need to support the one playing. That is the first point of call,” says former Chiefs keeper Aubrey Mathibe.
