Gardeners today take a lot for granted. Just as we can buy any fruit or vegetables in the supermarket at any time of year, so we are able to plant container-grown perennials, trees and shrubs all the year round. But this is a relatively recent innovation – I can remember when containergrown plants were limited to those used as decoration in the house. Almost everything else was dug up from nursery rows in the dormant season – between October and March – and planted ‘bare root’ with little or no soil attached. And they grew!
