London’s first fish-and-chip shop was opened in 1860. The proprietor was Joseph Malin, an immigrant who brought the ancient Jewish tradition of fried fish to a grateful East End. The significance of this will become clear later, but right now we have a topic so abstruse that it defies even Wiki’s powerful search tools: motor racing and food.
The link between mere motoring and food is, however, well-established. The Michelin brothers realised that no-one ever says ‘I’ve had, which reasoned that the purpose of car ownership was to make a ‘voyage’ to dinner at a good restaurant… wearing-out tyres the while.
