This island’s lunar-like landscapes, black-sand beaches and imposing dunes make it perfect for exploring.

Far from holiday-package hell, this is a cultured and exotic island. The landscape is dominated by volcanoes, and the black lava soil contrasts with the white Cubist architecture, green palms and cacti.

In order to fully appreciate how this island was born, be sure to take a trip to Timanfaya National Park in the south-western part of the island. A guided tour is a great way to experience and learn about the true nature of this landscape, which is dubbed the ‘Fire Mountains’, and with good reason – just a few metres below the surface, temperatures can reach a staggering 600C.

Another great day out is a drive through the wine-growing region of La Geria. Here you’ll see the black lava soil decorated with hundreds of moon-shaped stone
