ON AN X THROUGH AFRICA

In 1982, the now defunct Afrikaans magazine Motorfiets published an article about Eckhart Hollstein (30), a German guy from South West Africa – this was before Namibian independence – who undertook an overlanding trip through Africa.

Eckhart started his journey in Munich, Germany, in November 1981 on a Honda XL500 he had purchased earlier that year and he ended up in a ditch. It scared him enough to ride at a more sedate pace to Genoa. From there, he sailed across the Mediterranean to Tunisia, from where he rode to Algeria.
