we entered the darkened room, I could see the portfolio box with the words ‘William Henry Fox Talbot’ on the cover. The curator opened the box and took out probably the most historically important photograph in the world ‘Latticed Window, Lacock Abbey,’ 1835. It is a paper negative – the oldest in the world – which I proceeded to hold up against the dim ceiling light.
