Sometimes it seems owning an air-cooled VW doesn’t leave much time to do much else. In our busy lives just driving, maintaining and attending shows in a classic VW can take up all available spare time, yet there are some folk who somehow find they’re able to commit to a second major hobby, too.

For Kevin Burns, that other passion is restoring old scooters such as Vespas and Lambrettas, those of the design that look just as cool stood still as they do on the move.

It helps that Kevin works as a motorcycle technician, yet somehow he managed to find the time to restore and modify this ’66 Split to a standard on a par with any of his ‘smaller’ restorations, and with only a little help from his daughter’s future husband, Sam.

“I’ve always been a lover of VWs in general, and had a few as daily drivers, but then I was introduced to the classic side by my mate, Andy Dutton,” Kevin remembers. “He owned a lovely Beetle
