There’s a lovely dynamism to Stacey Gledhill’s new painting Two Black Cats, as the composition resolves itself nicely and the whole canvas purrs with purpose and life. It is perhaps no surprise to discover that this deceptively simple work actually had a lengthy gestation period as the artist mulled over her potential subject for more than a year.

Lockdown had caused the New Zealand-born artist to forsake her Oxford studio and work from home, though this actually proved a “creatively fertile” period as ideas for new paintings seemed to arrive thick and fast.
