How to make a simple pine picture frame

For the frame in this article I am combining a decorative pine dado moulding (20X45mm) with a simple pine batten (21X36mm), both purchased at B&Q. Battens thinner than 21mm might be preferred for thinner pictures.

Mitre saw

This photo shows how I clamp my mitre saw to a stool – some sort of base, such as a workbench, is desirable but not essential. Before cutting it is necessary to mark out the wood to the desired measurement. It is deceptively easy to cut wood to the wrong measurement – I know that because I’ve done it many times over the years – so remember the saying ‘measure twice, cut once’. Clamp the wood, if possible, to hold it firmly.
