T WAS in 1973 that Ron Pearce started with birds. In a threebedroom flat, he used his small bedroom to accommodate several species. He kept a few Bourke’s parakeets, Pekin robins and mixed finches, including some strawberry finches and zebras. He was feeding the softbills with maggots. Then his girlfriend moved in, and one Sunday when she was in the bath the bathroom was invaded by bluebottles.
