THE MAKING OF ghost hunter
ghosthunter was a horrorthemed action adventure game developed by SCE Cambridge, makers of the cult MediEvil series. Released in 2003 exclusively for the PlayStation 2, players assumed the role of Lazarus Jones, a rookie detective of the Boston PD turned spook exterminator. Called out to investigate strange goings on at an abandoned high school, the premise saw Jones accidentally unleashing a horde of assorted ghosts, ghoulies and long-legged beasties from a mysterious machine housed in the school’s basement. With the help of the machine’s sentient AI program, players were tasked with undoing the mess Jones had made and stopping a sinister plot along the way.
’s core gameplay was a mix of combat and puzzle solving. Jones controlled in third-person, with players able to switch between standard traversal and a zoomed-in targeting mode that slowed movement. The player could also go into a fully first-person mode, although they couldn’t move in this perspective. Early on in the game, Jones’ spirit is fused with a benevolent mute spectre called Astral. As well as allowing him to see ghosts, Astral also provided the game’s main puzzle
