Tall, slim, elegantly attractive and singing barefoot, my all-time Sixties female singer is Sandie Shaw. I can’t really say that I was in love with her but she had a captivating presence that demanded my admiration as a young teenager.

Brought up in Dagenham, Essex, Sandra Ann Goodrich, eventually to become known as Sandie Shaw, left school to work (as most school-leavers did) in the local Ford factory, whilst doing some part-time modelling in her spare time.

She also entered local talent contests as a singer and came runner-up in one, her prize being an appearance in a charity concert in London. Fortunately, at this event, she was spotted by none other than
