WHAT TO DO IN OCTOBER

■ For an early crop of broad beans next year, sow the seeds now in pots to produce strong plants for growing on.

■ Check potatoes growing in pots and keep the compost moist at all times and the plants frost-free.

■ Take semi-ripe cuttings from shrubby herbs such as sage and rosemary and root them in a propagator.

■ If you have any tender vegetables growing
