Reaching for the moon

Some people may call her moonstruck, but that doesn’t bother Gaye Boshoff at all. “Maybe it’s my inner hippie, but I quite fancy being a bit of a witch – in the garden and in the kitchen,” she says, shaking with laughter.

She has, after all, been preoccupied with the lunar cycle for years, planting crops in alignment with the phases of the moon. And, she says, it has not only produced many an impressive harvest, but also the birth of her Moonbloom vegetable and herb planting calendar, which she’s compiled, designed and published since 2016. (Read more about the calendar on page 96.)

“One of my great pleasures in life is to grow healthy, organic food for my family. I believe that the lunar calendar – which I originally compiled for myself – has played a significant role in my successful harvests I need to plant and to produce stronger plants and to guarantee a better yield.”
