If, as the old adage goes, “nothing lasts forever”, someone should tell a few fleet-owners in this country. While not quite as old as some European entities, the venerable operations here are fairly close behind.
Toll Group is often the first to come to mind of those who began haulage using horse and cart. Its lineage can be traced back to 1888 Newcastle.
But it gets more than pipped by Sadleirs, which counts the Swan River colony, forerunner of the state of Western Australia, and 1829 for its foundation.
Inbetweeners include leading part-food, part-distribution operation PFD Food Services.
And, as if to prove that though history doesn’t repeat but it does rhyme, PFD, the former J Hill & Son that kicked off in 1864, delivering fresh fish, has made a strong seafood push in recent years.
