Partners in Crime

Steve Martin and Martin Short have been besties since shooting ¡Three Amigos! in 1986. As you would expect, they make each other laugh and enjoy hanging out – be it on stage, films sets or real life, with their families regularly hooking up to vacation together.

It’s no surprise, then, that Martin immediately chose Marty to be his co-star in Only Murders In The Building, a 10-part comedy series he co-created and co-wrote for Hulu (it will appear on Disney+ in the UK). The trio are washed-up actor Charles (Martin), faded theatre director Oliver (Short) and the secretive, who-knows-what-she-does Mabel (Selena Gomez), and they decide to not just solve the murder but turn their investigation into a podcast. Like we said, a doozy of an idea, and one that allows for plenty of meta-fun, with our snooping heroes offering deconstructions of the murdermystery genre as they tiptoe (and often blunder) about their business.

For today’s chat with , Martin and Short have agreed to an audio-only Zoom call, but Martin immediately comments on it being a great shame because he looks fantastic this morning. Shall we turn our cameras on then? “I’ll put mine on,” says Short, but it’s Martin’s face that pops up. “I was lying, I look terrible,” he says. A pause. “Are you going to come on, Marty?” asks the star of such classics as , , and . “I to to , but he can’t do technology.
