Buying any pre-owned motor car is fraught with danger. You have to go on face value, trust your instincts and the word of the seller. When the car is a 68-year-old classic MG TD you can be sure that the very fact it exists means that a lot of work must have been done. Often this can be obvious, perhaps as obvious as the work done on the pretty TD on these very pages and yet, as lovely as it now appears, Geoff Bethell’s MG still held some dark and disappointing secrets for him.
He had always fancied a classic car; the sort of thing many people look at owning when work commitments release their grip in exchange for more time for leisurely pursuits. It is a view through rose-tinted spectacles for many of us when we see ourselves cruising effortlessly on the sunny leafy roads of our green and pleasant land.
