1 THE GROWER: Jenny Lux, Lux Organics, Rotorua

Jenny is one of New Zealand’s home compostable packaging pioneers. In 2018, she worked with Hamilton packaging manufacturer Convex New Zealand to develop a compostable bag for her certified organic salad greens. After 15 months of development and trialling, the result was the EcoClear fresh produce bag, a product that now sits under the umbrella of Convex’s Econic brand.

The bags aren’t 100% plant-based. They contain some fossil fuel components because plant-based resins alone won’t work with wet product like lettuce and meats. They’re totally clear, so contain no inks. Jenny says they break down in compost very quickly (she composts them in separate piles that aren’t used in the market garden) and she’s happy with them because they work.
