GLENNA LUSCHEI PRIZE FOR AFRICAN POETRY

Maneo Refiloe Mohale of Johannesburg, South Africa, won the 2020 Glenna Luschei Prize for African Poetry for Everything Is a Deathly Flower (uHlanga, 2019). They received $1,000. Phillippa Yaa de Villiers judged. The annual award is given for a book of poetry by an African poet published in the previous year. (SEE DEADLINES.)

ALICE JAMES AWARD

A Public Space

A PUBLIC SPACE WRITING FELLOWSHIPS

Fiction writers Kate Doyle of Ithaca, New York, and Gustavo Rueda of Chicago, and nonfiction writer Jazmine Harris of Chicago received the 2021 A Public Space Writing Fellowships. They each received $1,000, a six-month mentorship with the editors to prepare a piece for publication in A Public Space, and the opportunity to meet with publishing professionals and participate in a public reading. The annual fellowships are given to emerging fiction writers and nonfiction writers who have not published a full-length book. The next deadline is January 31, 2022.

Asheville Poetry Review

WILLIAM MATTHEWS POETRY PRIZE

Sean Webb of Philadelphia won the 2021 William Matthews Poetry Prize for “American Genesis.” He received $1,000, and his poem will be published in Volume 28, Issue 31 of Asheville Poetry Review. He also received an invitation to give a reading at Malaprop’s Bookstore in Asheville, North Carolina. Quincy Troupe judged. The annual award is given for a single poem. The next deadline is January 15, 2022.

BALCONES PRIZES

Heid E. Erdrich of Minneapolis won the 24th annual Balcones Poetry Prize for her poetry collection Little Big Bully (Penguin Books). ire’ne lara silva judged. Fowzia Karimi of Denton, Texas, won the 11th annual Balcones Fiction Prize for her novel Above Us the Milky Way (Deep Vellum). Chaitali Sen judged. The winners each received $1,500. The annual awards honor a book of poetry and a book of fiction published during the previous year. The next deadline is January 31, 2022.
