Tomatoes

It’s not warm enough to grow tomatoes outside until at least Labour Day, but you can sow them from seed under cover now. Sow seeds around 5mm deep in trays of moist seed-raising mix. Transplant them into containers of potting mix once they have their second set of leaves, then repot them as required. Once the risk of the last frost has passed, harden them off over a period of a few weeks, then plant them outside, leaving around 50cm between plants. Cherry tomato ‘Sweet 100’ is the most failproof tomato I’ve ever met, but you might like to try some of the handsome offerings such as striped ‘Green Zebra’ or, if you don’t have much space, ‘Minibelle for Pots’.
