SAWYER GETS HIS ATTACK BACK ON TRACK

Gordon Sawyer bounced back from disqualification to win the third Caterham Seven UK race at Brands Hatch and reignite his title challenge.

Having twice exchanged the race-two lead with Saturday winner Will Smith, Sawyer nosed inside Smith again at Clearways without spotting that yellow flags were still out for Gordon Macdonald’s stricken machine. That also prised an opening for Stephen Nuttall to pass Smith into Paddock Hill Bend and Nuttall later rounded Sawyer, who would be thrown out of the result, at the same corner to take his fourth win of the season.

Afired-up Sawyer then charged from the back of the grid, drafting past Henry Heaton – who himself had risen from fifth – to lead, before fending off Heaton’s fightback. “I was just so determined,” said Sawyer. “The slightest little door opened, I was gone.” Aday earlier, Sawyer had dropped from first to third after being passed by both Smith and Heaton at Paddock Hill Bend. Apair of fourths allied to his win mean Nuttall remains atop the standings.
