HOW SUSTAINABLE IS YOUR KITCHEN?

What we eat, how we store it and what we throw away has a huge impact on the environment. Unused food creates a terrible cycle – crops and livestock are produced needlessly, while waste sent to landfill creates harmful greenhouse gases. And food’s not the only thing we squander in the hub of the home.

Who hasn’t been careless with energy and water? Meanwhile, harsh chemicals get poured down the sink. It all adds up to making the kitchen the worst eco offender in the house. But, by eating with the seasons, shopping mindfully, being less reliant on meat and looking after our precious resources, we can easily do better. Here’s how…

1 Divide and conquer

Be a super-recycler with a bin that Each local authority recycles differently, so visit your council’s website or the interactive pages on to find out more. Do you know your recycling symbols? Look out for a white circle on a green square and be aware that some packaging needs to be rinsed, or have its cap or sleeve removed, before it can be recycled.
