Whiskeys are tasted blind, with only proof and style information given to the experts. In this edition, Peggy Noe Stevens and Susan Reigler give their palates a workout.

Peggy Noe Stevens

Peggy Noe Stevens became the world's first female master Bourbon taster and can trace her lineage back to some of the great Bourbon making families in Kentucky. In 2011, she created the Bourbon Women Association.

Susan Reigler

Susan Reigler is the author of several Bourbon books, including Kentucky Bourbon Country: The Essential Travel Guide, and is a former restaurant critic and beverage columnist for the Louisville Courier-Journal. She is the immediate past president of the Bourbon Women Association.

Peggy

Nose: Vanilla bean and an earthy tone of butterscotch and toffee. Fig-sweet with streaks of wild berries and maple syrup. Milk chocolate with crushed walnut.

Palate: Opens with vanilla and milk chocolate truffles then meanders over to spices of peppercorn and sage.

Finish: Classy, wraps the tongue and has staying power on all flavors, truly interesting.

Comments: A handsome whiskey that charms any palate no matter how you play hard to get.

Susan

Nose: Freshly laundered linens with fennel. Crème brûlée and milk chocolate, joined by sliced apple.

Palate: Cherries covered in dark chocolate, then caramel and allspice. Peppery oak.

Finish: Graham cracker to start, which progresses to sweet, then spicy, oak. This is satisfyingly long.

Comments: Versatile. Use in a cocktail or sip neat. Equally at home before or aft er dinner. Try with a piece of fine dark chocolate
