LONG WAND LUDERICK

Late winter is often regarded as a more challenging time of year, especially for the land-based fishos in Sydney Harbour. Conditions are of course colder and many fish that were once active in the warmer months are no longer a reliable target.

When you’re feeling like a productive day of fishing where you could catch enough for dinner or have an almost guaranteed bite, then the good old humble luderick is one fish that won’t let you down.

Winter to early spring is a time for these fish to migrate in mass schools to the lower parts of estuaries and rivers. Sydney Harbour is no exception. Here they will spawn over the winter and early spring in the more saline oceanic waters. These fish known as “bronzies” based on lighter bronze colouring as opposed to their usual darker appearance upriver, and can be in huge abundant concentrations and of perfect conditioning.
