NO WALK IN THE PARK
I greatly enjoyed Alasdair Mitchell’s piece on stalking red deer in the Highlands (Where mighty beasts mooch, 14 July), but I had to smile when he seemed to dismiss the larger reds to be found elsewhere as ‘easy’ and ‘ponderous’.
That may be true in Richmond Park — it certainly isn’t here in east Norfolk. This landscape is intensively arable, interspersed with patches of carr (swampy woodland) and thick reedbed. The fact that such huge animals are thriving in flat, wide-open country like this is down to their almost paranormal ability to detect threats.
