HAVING TRANSPORTED 140 MILLION visitors up Victoria Peak since its last upgrade in 1989, Hong Kong’s iconic Peak Tram has closed for a six-month, HK$700 million upgrade that will be its fifth renovation since it began operation in 1888. The first version of the 396-metre funicular was designed by Scottish-born , opened in May 1888 by Governor and used coal-fired steam boilers. Now, properties group director for The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, which includes the Peak Tram development, said: “The new carriages look absolutely stunning, I’m really excited that people will look at them and immediately think that they’ve been there for a long time, but of course the system is extremely modern.”
