M715 SEEMS TO BE SLIPPING

My M715 has started acting up in 3rd and 4th gear on the road. It acts like the clutch might be slipping because the engine speeds up but the truck doesn’t. But this doesn’t happen in 1st and 2nd gear. If the clutch was slipping, wouldn’t this happen in all gears? — T. Snyder

It’s only a matter of time until it starts happening in your five-quarter’s lower gears, as well. Right now, there is still enough mechanical advantage to keep the clutch from slipping in the bottom gears. The clutch disc may be worn out, and/or it may be oil-soaked from a leaky engine rear main or transmission input seal.

In either case, you should replace the clutch assembly or risk scoring the flywheel. If oil was the problem, then you will want to replace the appropriate seals as well.
