They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Perhaps that point was missed centuries past, when wild, remote areas were perceived as uncivilised and dangerous. Had it not been for the likes of the Romantic poets who found inspiration in the beauty of ‘untamed’ countryside, things may have remained so well beyond the 19th Century.
