HELEN WEST is fully aware of the mammoth task in hand. Asked why she is taking on the job of British Eventing (BE) chief executive, she says: “That’s a really good question!” But “the timing feels right” for the manager of Bicton Arena, who was voted on to the BE board by members last year.

“The last few months have given me a snapshot of the situation,” she says. “I’ve got the appetite; I want to pick up the challenge. I know it won’t be easy, or plain sailing, but I’m determined to give it my best shot.

“I’ve been in my current role eight years and it’s been incredibly fulfilling; putting Bicton back on the map and getting it to where it is, but the time feels right for a new challenge – and it’s certainly that.”

One issue when running any equestrian discipline has to be balancing the needs of everyone involved.
