People have been pressing plants for centuries as a way of making a biological record of time and place. Formal collections are known as herbariums – vast books in which preserved specimens are carefully labelled and catalogued. Oxford University houses the oldest herbarium in the UK, dating back to the sixteenth century, while Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens holds nearly three million conserved specimens.
