Do you remember? The Concert for Bangladesh

FlFTY YEARS ago something rather wonderful happened. A bunch of rock stars – that most pampered, vainglorious and self-centred of breeds – decided to do something that would benefit their fellow man, not because it would raise their profile, get their record to the top of the charts or earn them some favourable column inches in the papers, but simply because they could.

And not just any old rock stars, some of the biggest stars on the planet at that time, including half of The Beatles – George Harrison and Ringo Starr – Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton.

The impetus for the concert came from Harrison’s friend, the virtuoso sitar player Ravi Shankar who, moved by the plight of the millions of refugees fleeing the independence war between
