Swindon visits

I read with interest the “One Last Visit to the Works” in SW408. It reminded me of my visits to Swindon Works; the wait outside and coming out of the tunnel to see the locomotives for repairs, ex works and for scrap. An enjoyable read.

Can I make an amendment to this article’s remembrance of the May 9 1964 ‘Castle’ Class passing through Swindon. The locomotive used on the last leg of that Ian Allan railtour was. I was lucky enough to be on that epic railtour and my photograph shows 4079 at Paddington about to haul the first leg only to fail and limp in to Westbury.
