CHECKING IN WITH THE CZECHS

It was October 2008. Barack Obama was still on the campaign trail and John McCain was wagging his finger PW Botha style. It was an exciting time.

My wife, Lea (as in tea), was the MD of a hake fishery and I was running my consultancy and teaching part time at UCT. Our boys were 12 and 13.

Lea was invited to the Ground Fish Conference in Prague and traded in her business class ticket for two normal mense tickets. But she needed to see clients in Figo, Spain and I had to teach a class of 320 third-year engineering students. So off she went and I followed a few days later. I went to the airport directly from a lecture.

We coordinated our flights in front of them. They had permanent sneers on their faces. I think customs officials are bred like that. Either that or these guys have family in Rio.
