ALL THINGS CONSIDERED: HOLIDAYS BY STEAM

With spring in full bloom, thoughts naturally turn to holidays and time to get away (which, as I write, is now allowed again in the UK). It is possible, given all that has gone on in 2020, that we will see a surge in holidays in the UK in the long term, doing what the Great Western Railway once exhorted us to do – ‘see your own country first.’

The recent withdrawal from service of the 1938 London Underground stock on the Isle of Wight reminded century, no doubt helped by the publicity surrounding Queen Victoria whose ‘palatial former holiday home’ (to quote English Heritage) Osborne House, is on the island near Cowes.
