Doetsch’s Pit (pronounced “Deet-shz”) … even when whispered, its name struck terror into the hearts of the neighborhood kids.
Doetsch’s Pit-65 feet deep and the size of two football fields-was an abandoned limestone quarry at the edge of our hometown of Evanston, Ill. Back in the 1950s, it was filled with stagnant rainwater and surrounded by a high chain-link fence with a heavy gate.
Doetsch’s Pit... all of us kids longed to tempt fate
