DIRT SAFARI
This event comprised predominately of BMW GS adventure bikes (1200 and 1250s in the majority) with over 200 riders in attendance. In typical BMW fashion the event was lavish, the locations superb and hotels luxurious. These safari’s cater for an older demographic with mechanics on hand ensuring the bikes were all running smoothly with fresh rubber the next day if required.
Starting out from Townsville, the ride clocked up 300-400km per day over six days, not a massive distance on any dirt bike. The GS models are renowned for their mile munching prowess, and ability to cover large distances on any terrain. The comfy seats and wind protection from the large windscreens up front provide excellent protection and minimal fatigue, a far cry from your average dirtbike. With entrants riding their bikes from as far away as Adelaide and Perth, this leg was a highlight of their journey. The safari had a mix of the best tar and dirt roads on offer in far north Queensland.
SIZE CAN BE DECEPTIVE
It has to be said up front, that these enormous steeds at first glance look far from suitable to be flicking through the tight stuff. The massive width of the GS BMW’s being their trademark parallel twin
